Alive and Kicking
by Mary ~ July 14th, 2007. Filed under: Uncategorized.I know lots of you have been asking about a health update from me and I am happy to report that my IV line came out yesterday. Does this mean I am cured? Not necessarily. My liver enzymes are down but still high (from all the Tylenol) so I am supposed to lay low on alcohol for one month. I am also supposed to take it easy at the gym, which is basically torture, but I was really happy to be back in yoga class this morning (finally). My blood infection levels (i.e. Typhoid) are much lower but not in the normal range, so the doc says he will recheck in one month. So that’s that.
My husband’s health, on the other hand, could certainly be better. Red is functioning at a level of stress that I have never seen in all the 14+ years that I have known him. Because of the hospital ordeal, Red had to catch up from being about 2 weeks behind in his bar studies. However, he took a practice exam yesterday and did much better than he thought, so I think he is back on target.

Here is Red, happy that he did well on his test. He stopped by on his way home to have a quick burger with me before going home to study.
As a random note – he has lost about 15 pounds during this ordeal. We also “celebrated” (meaning a 10 second mutual acknowledgement) of the passing of our 11-year first kiss anniversary. It was very romantic. Let’s just say I am holding out for our five-year wedding anniversary, coming up later in July. That being said, I have been working very hard to keep myself occupied so I don’t distract him from studying. First, I started my new job, which I absolutely love.

Here I am with my team, eating Korean food for lunch. We had a great time.
It is really nice to enjoy my job this much for the first time in a long time. I had no idea finance could be so fun! For those of you who are in finance, I am working in the area of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) and fixed income derivatives. Basically, it is at the cutting edge of finance, where the legal issues are completely unknown. It gives me a lot of room to be creative and imagine all the possible things that could go wrong in a transaction.

Plus, I get to have fun with my new friends! One of my fellow summer associates threw a party at her place last night…right above the Hershey’s factory in Times Square!
Also, in the most serendipitous turn of events, Scott and Elizabeth got delayed overnight in Newark on their way home from their honeymoon. So they came to stay with us and I can’t tell you how nice it was to see them after missing the wedding. We had a great time looking at all the photos and enjoying a nice bottle of champagne.

The newlyweds!
I also went to Robin and Vickie’s cabin in the Poconos. They got a new boat and we had an absolute blast.

We also roasted marshmallows, which were delicious.
I also got to hang out with Theresa and Bob and my nieces and nephews when they came through New York for a few days. We went to Italian in Little Italy.

From left to right: Mary, Amanda, David (a little jet lagged, and completely asleep with his face next to his spaghetti), Bob, Jake and my lovely sister Theresa. They live in Korea but are visiting the States this summer.
Other than that, I have been taking it pretty easy. I put together a nice conglomeration of photos called Not Studying for the Bar: Life without Red, which captures all the fun I’ve had…without Red. Needless to say, the poor guy (along with all my other law school friends) are being tortured, so please do not call or email him about anything until after July 27, 2006. It just stresses him out. Feel free, however, to distract me as much as possible.

Here he is, studying on the couch (I took this about 10 minutes ago).
And in other news,

Happy Birthday to Mark!

Happy Birthday Wanda! Here she is being cool with her sisters, Karen and Sharon.

Happy Birthday Bob! Here he is, celebrating Scott’s graduation from high school!

Happy Birthday Granny! 95, wow! Here she is on her 90th (and me, back when I was 190!)

Happy Birthday to Jake! He is proudly showing his loot from his hard work at Dave and Busters.

Happy Birthday to Patti…on 07/07/07 no less!

Happy Birthday to Ellen! (I stole this shot off her myspace…)
Hope all is going well with you and yours!
Love,
Mary
